When individuals get married, prenuptial agreements can protect them from the turmoil that often accompanies divorce. For most couples in Clark County, prenuptial agreements discuss the division of property, and they may include arrangements regarding spousal support or child support.
However, there are couples, especially those in high-asset marriages, who need more from their prenuptial agreements. For high-profile individuals, prenuptial agreements can protect spouses from being exposed by malicious soon-to-be ex-spouses.
That is one element that is detailed in the prenuptial agreement between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries -- in the form of a confidentiality agreement -- and that may be why Kris is looking for an annulment.
If Kris is able to get his 72-day marriage to Kim annulled, then it makes the prenuptial agreement disappear. If the couple files for divorce -- meaning the prenuptial would stay in place -- Kris is forbidden from slamming Kim to news sources.
According to one weekly magazine editor, Kris would likely only make about $200,000 telling his side of the story to a magazine -- unless he had some devastating information about Kim. However, the editor went on to say, "Kim is one of the most reported on women in the world. Believe me, if there was a smoking gun we would have known about it by now."
Moreover, most of the people who read celebrity gossip magazines are female. While readers may not be thrilled with Kim's decision to end her marriage, females "never like it when a man profits from a kiss-and-tell."
Kris allegedly cited fraud as his reason for wanting to annul his marriage to Kim. He claimed that she viewed him as nothing more than her latest headline and newest business venture.
Regardless of whether you enjoy the Kardashians, there is no denying their business smarts. Last year the Kardashian family brought in an estimated $65 million, and it's unlikely they'll let that be threatened by an MBA player who devastated Kim.
