Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve are passed. For families throughout Clark County, the beginning of January marks the end of the holiday season. However, that also means something else might be looming on the horizon.

According to statistics, more people file for divorce in January than they do in any other month. One divorce lawyer said that some attorneys take the last two weeks of December to prepare for the rush and help ensure they have the capacity to handle to the extra cases they will inevitably get. Other family law attorneys report that their websites start getting significantly more traffic the day after Christmas.

The numbers have spoken; January is "Divorce Month." But why?

There are a few reasons why couples file in January, but children are often a large part of the decision. Children expect the holidays to be a merry, magical time. Although parents may be struggling with their marriages, they can often agree to working together to give their children one last holiday season with an intact family.

Once the holidays are over, many parents feel emotionally drained from extra effort of the holidays. In addition, because the holidays can carry so many intense emotions, individuals who are unhappy or angry in their marriages sometimes reach their breaking points during the holidays.

Finally, tax filing status is also a consideration for some people. Your marital status is determined on Dec. 31, so some couples wait until January to help ensure they're still able to get tax benefits with their 2011 tax returns.
